Pretty Dress and Football

This is my Best Lady dress for David and April's wedding!! You'll have to send me warm thoughts when I'm wearing it in January. In Pittsburgh. Brr!! But I LOVE the dress. And the color. April made a very good choice. Now we need to figure out flights and hotels and stuff. And I need to start planning the wedding shower. And other things that I won't say because David reads my blog, and I may or may not have a surprise in mind...
I'm meeting Daniel at Jeff and Tracy's after work today. He's been at a conference at Carolina Beach all week, and his co-worker is dropping him off at their house. We are going to Virginia tomorrow for the App/JMU game. It's going to be a good game for sure, and it's a night game! Just like we heard about Michigan and LSU fans, the rumors are flying about how mean the JMU fans are going to be, and that there will be fights and blah blah blah. After being pleasantly surprised with the fans in both Ann Arbor and Baton Rouge, I expect the same thing for Harrisonburg. I'll be sure to let you know though. We are going to be grill-less at our tailgate this time. The replacement parts Daniel had to order for our grill have not come in yet, so we'll probably be making sandwiches. Come by our tent to visit if you're up there! I'm hoping to have some Octoberfest and/or Pumpkin beer!

Well that's one way to cop a feel...

As seen on the AppFan Blog today:
"In popular demand. If you see someone wearing this, you must rub their chest."

I emailed the AppFan Blog:
"Sounds like a reason for Katie Bonk NOT to wear that shirt."

AppFan Blog reply:
"I had some dude at our LSU game shindig insist on rubbing that tshirt logo on my chest. Not in a “if a chick was wearing that shirt” kinda way, but a “this is for good luck” kinda way.
At least .. that’s what he said."

mmm hmmm....

This is my friend Allison.

We have to put a helmet on her sometimes so that she won't hurt herself. Her boss took this picture.

App State vs LSU Weekend Wrap-Up

I'm back! Yes, we survived Gustav, and the heat, and the game. This is going to be a looooong post. Where do I begin?... Thursday night, Jeff, Chad, and I went to the Greensboro Grasshoppers game where we sat at the bar and watched football. Hey, the beers were only a dollar, and the baseball game was a blowout. Erica was there, and it's always fun to catch up with her. Chad is a lightweight, and after about 3 beers, he was too drunk to fend off what he referred to as a "she-man" who was hitting on him. So he left me alone with her, and I had to get rid of her. On the way home from the game, we stopped at Cook-Out for some yummyliciousness, and a homeless man wanted money from us. Not food, but money. Hmm...

Friday morning, Jeff, Tracy, Chad, and I drove to Raleigh to catch our first flight to Houston. Surprisingly, the airport was not crowded or busy at all. (The last time I was in the Raleigh airport was when
this happened. Not good memories!) I'm happy to report that all of my encounters with airport security were quick and easy for all of my flights. As soon as we landed in Houston, my phone blew up with text messages and voice mails asking if I had seen that the game was moved from 4pm to 10am because of the hurricane. I was bummed to hear that Joan's hubby and son wouldn't be able to make the earlier game time. As we were walking through the Houston airport looking for a place to eat, I heard someone call out, "Katie B?!". There sat Daniel's cousin Katie finishing up her lunch at Chili's!!! After the shock and surprise wore off, we sat down and had a couple of beers with her. She was flying home for the weekend from Portland, and I was bummed that I wasn't going to be able to see her again until Christmas. Apparently, we should've compared flight schedules! Small world!

Once we got to Baton Rouge, it was about 5:30pm, and we all got cleaned up to go out. We went downtown to eat at
Schlittz and Giggles, then we walked to the Hollywood Casino where Tracy won Jeff and Chad a few bucks at the roulette table. Then we called our favorite taxi driver, Simon, to come pick us up and take us back to the hotel. (Simon was Jamaican, but he's lived in Baton Rouge for 15 years. He was very funny, and he was equally amused by us.) Earlier that night, we got news that the Appalachian tailgate would start at 7:30am and the beer and Bloody Mary's would be free! The 6 of us were up before 5am to get ready and in a cab by 6am. We walked around campus for a little bit before making our way to the App tailgate which opened early, and we had our first drinks around 7am. FEMA had taken over the field house where the tailgate was supposed to be held (where there was air-conditioning!), so they had to move it outside. Luckily, we were in the shade the whole time, and it was not too bad that early in the morning. We saw a few people at the tailgate including BlueRidgeBlog and Gnumoon. I will say here that the LSU fans we encountered were all super nice which was the exact opposite of what we were expecting. (I said the same thing for the Michigan fans last year.) Other than the oh-so-original, "Tiger Bait" comments, all of the LSU fans welcomed us to Baton Rouge and wished us luck in the game.

Now to the game... After consuming approximately 4-5 beers at the tailgate, we knew that we needed to switch to water upon entering the stadium. Thankfully, they were selling 2 bottles for $3 all day. Our seats were waaaaaaaaay up in the sky, about 10 feet away from the sun, and Katie Bonk suffered some heat exhaustion by the 2nd quarter. I was dizzy, and ditzy, and all around not feeling good. After drinking 8 bottles of water, I was not sweating a bit. That's not good. So I went under the stands sometime during the 3rd quarter and waited for the others to leave the game. Yes, I missed the best parts of the game, but I was beyond miserable in the Baton Rouge sunshine. (Thanks to some well-applied sunscreen though, I miraculously walked away completely sunburn-free!) The final score was 41-13, LSU. I was just happy to get on the scoreboard. I felt sorry for our boys playing in the heat while wearing all of their pads and black uniforms. All things considered, they played a good game.

After the game, we walked to Reginelli's where we were able to get a table right away. The air-condition felt incredibly good, and the food was tasty too. It took us about 2 hours to get a cab back to the hotel, but Mike called one who let us get all 7 of us in for a very scary ride to the hotel. Turns out, the driver only had one eye, and he was all over the road. He was quite fond of the brake pedal too. Allison was in the front seat (with Chad), and was trying her best to carry on a conversation with the Louisiana native. While Chad looked up the driver's lotto numbers on his phone, Allison had to decipher what he was saying when he asked if we had "turrels" (turtles) in North Carolina. If anyone who reads this is ever around Jeff, PLEASE ask him to tell you this story, because I can't do it justice in writing. In the back seat of the cab, Jeff, Tracy, Wendy, Mike, and I held on for our lives as the driver swerved in and out of traffic. At one point, Mike said, "I think I just sat on the axle."

We finally made it back to our hotel, and all of us CRASHED. Then some idiot drove his car into the power pole right in front of our hotel, and the power went out. In Baton Rouge. In AUGUST. It was out for over four hours, and it was miserably hot. Chad and Jeff kept taking cold showers to cool off. We didn't do much of anything that night because we were all so exhausted from our long day in the heat.

Allison and Wendy left for the airport at some awful time Sunday morning when it was still dark outside because their flight was at 6am or something ridiculous like that. Our flight was at 11:30am, but we left around 8:30 in case traffic from the contraflow was bad. The Baton Rouge airport is about the size of a strip mall. There are 7 gates there. Total. And every gate had Appalachian people waiting for flights. We were very uneasy when there were NO PLANES for two hours, and no airline employees at any of the gates. Poor Mike's flight wasn't even on the departures board. (He did make it home safe and sound.) Our flight left on time, and we were back in Houston. (No Katie this time!) Other than flying through some of the bands of Hurricane Gustav on the way to Raleigh, the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. I got home around 9pm Sunday, and I slept until after 1pm Monday afternoon.

So, that's our trip- all of the ups and downs of it. I'm glad I went, but I think I can do without another trip to Louisiana in my life. Well, maybe I would go to New Orleans, but not during hurricane season, and certainly not in the summer! This Saturday is our first home game of the season, and it looks like Hurricane Hanna is coming to Boone. Bring it on- I've been in worse weather up there for a football game!
